Sharks
status: some shark populations have declined by as much as 90% in the last decade and a number of species are now considered endangered, threatened or vulnerable.
threats: overfishing - to satisfy the global market for shark's fin soup is a main threat. Sharks are killed as bycatch (meaning they are not the original target the fishing fleet was aiming for), or captured in long-line fisheries such as tuna. Sharks are also threatened by a number of environmental pressures from habitat loss and degradation to pollution.
-sharks are indicators of the oceans' ecological health. as top predators, serious disturbances to their numbers may affect many other species below them in the food chain
-sharks are highly vulnerable to over-exploitation due to their longevity, late maturity and slow reproduction process
-increasingly sharks are 'finned' and the rest of their bodies, often while the shark is still alive, are dumbed at sea. Shark fins represent between 1 and 5% of the shark's body weight, therefore 95-99% of the shark is being wasted
DID YOU KNOW:
-that despite the shark's reputation as a vicious predator, very few - perhaps ten - of hte more than 400 species of shark have been known to attack humans and often this is because humans are mistaken for the sharks' normal prey
-the number of consumers who could afford, or had access to shark fin has risen from a few million in the eighties to more than 300 million day. what was once the privilege of the few has now become routine for the many and hte resource cannot sustain this level of exploitation. in fact, singapore is one of the largest consumer markets for shark's fin
when the buying stops, the killing can too.
