sharks are being killed for their fins for a bowl of soup which isn't scientifically proven to have health benefits. it doesn't even have any taste, it's made of cartilage.
that's like killing us for our noses.
and people don't care cause:
1. they think sharks are fierce and are a danger to humans.
well, sharks only kill an average of 5 people a year. while smoking kills about 120 000 a year and starvation kills 8 000 000 a year.
and sharks only attack human when provoked, or when they smell blood. also because sometimes, the silhouette of a human swimming from underwater looks like the silhouette of an injured seal, which sharks like to prey on.
2. people believe there still many many sharks for them to kill. and even if they become extinct, so what?
well, there aren't many many sharks left. and the extinction of any animal results in the ecosystem being unbalanced. which means, it will affect us humans too.
worse, after their fins are cut off, the shark is kicked backed into the ocean, where they sink to the bottom and die of suffocation, or loss of blood, or fall prey to other animals. this is to make space on the boat for more of those shark fins.
there is even an illegal multi-million dollar sharkfin industry in taiwan which the authorities should be well aware of but do nothing to stop it.
the shark has survived for millions of years, but will they survive us?
(movies like sharkwater should be screened free and all those rich tai tais who eat sharkfins everyday should be forced to watch it)
